More about the immune system...
The immune system is arguably one of our most important health assets, given that it directly affects health, vitality and longevity. It's purpose is to identify the body's 'enemies' and destroy them. These enemies include defective body cells, as well as foreign agents such as bacteria and viruses. Many natural health practitioners believe that it is a far more effective strategy (wherever possible) to focus on strengthening the body, rather than on trying to find ways to artifically conquer invading organisms.
Traditionally, medicine has focussed on this second approach, i.e. drugs that are designed to destroy harmful pathogens that have entered the body, with antibiotics, anti-viral agents etc. Whilst these are certainly effective, they also have their down-sides, not to mention side-effects. As with everything, prevention is better than cure and it is usually preferably to support the body's own natural defences than rely on intervention after the fact which can ultimately lead to a weakening of the immune system.
Only relatively recently, with the epidemic of infections such as MRSA and C-difficile and widespread antibiotic resistance, has attention turned towards naturally strengthening immunity as a priority. The immune system is one of the most remarkable, delicate and complex systems in the body. It has the ability to produce a million specific antibodies in a minute and to recognise and neutralise a billion antigens (harmful organisms)!
With this power in mind, the strategy to boost immune power makes a lot of sense. The ability to react rapidly to a new invader can make all the difference between a minor 24-hour cold or stomach bug and a week in bed with flu or food poisoning. So just how do you do it? Well, exercise, state of mind and diet all play an important part.
The main entry points into the body for antigens are:
Within the digestive tract is the vital 'gut-associated immune system', which is programmed to allow completely digested food particles (such as amino acids, fatty acids and simple sugars) to pass unhindered through the gut wall into the body. Incompletely digested food can result in immune reactions and eventually allergies, especially if large food particles enter the bloodstream.
The nasal passages help to prevent unwanted agents from entering the lungs, whilst healthy and strong mucous membranes in the respiratory and digestive tracts are the first line of defence against invaders.
